I’m gonna dip my toes into volunteering as a Flatpak/Flathub developer advocate—basically, providing a human contact at a real company that can help larger apps/companies get their apps in front of Linux (and thus Steam Deck!) users.
What are some of the biggest apps you think are missing from Flathub—or for apps already there, which are the ones you’d like to see verified?
I'm happy to report that thanks in part to my efforts (but mostly thanks to TingPing doing tons of up-front work, feaneron's constant help, and employees using Linux internally):
Discord is now verified on Flathub
@cassidy HOLY SHIT. YOU DID IT. Amazing. Incredible.
Wow. Literally. Wow.
@jorge now we just have to make sure their employees are empowered to maintain it. :D
@cassidy I'm sitting here with some half baked Dromeasaur while THE BLAEDE is just making it happen!
LMK if I can help, I had a few contacts years ago but they cycled out. Holy shit the amount of people who actually know how hard this is, well done! All of you!
@cassidy LET'S GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
"This wrapper is not verified by, affiliated with, or supported by Discord Inc."
Should this message be removed from the description?
@orowith2os @that_leaflet yeah lol I should have proposed that earlier, but they actually went and did the verification on Flathub during my evening and I totally missed it!
@cassidy Great.
Now we will have an even harder time educating people to
* not install yet another rotten copy of Google Chrome for every second website they want to access
* not use a closed walled-garden anti-privacy gaming platform for FOSS development communities
Thanks for your effort !
@nik There are a lot of reasons why Discord has a concerning impact on the FOSS communication space. Being verified on Flathub is not one of them. It was already one of the most popular apps in the entire store, and this change at least makes the experience safer for the people who do choose to use it.
@nik @cassidy Do you say about Chrome and Steam? Or just Discord...
Regarding Steam and gaming in general, I don't have much use of Discord for Steam/GOG anyways, I'd convince other people using Matrix instead. Discord's ToS and its history of bad decisions that screw users and the fact I don't have much use on it (I use Discord browser version, not installing on my Android phone and my Linux/Windows dual boot machine for multiple reasons). Time to ditch it completely
@cassidy we need you to know that what you’ve done is not cool.
It’s very cool
@cassidy any plans for arch64 version ? I am using MacBook Pro running fedora remix
@andirsun unfortunately they didn’t share their internal roadmap with me. But more seriously, if they take the next step of integrating Flatpak into their build pipeline (rather than ingesting a .deb or whatever from their existing pipeline), then it would be possible. But that’s completely on the side of Discord’s private build pipeline rather than the open Flatpak tooling.
@cassidy Will we be able to see a shortcut to Discord on Flathub from the Discord download page?
@chardinson hopefully that’s next, but I’m not clued into Discord’s internal priorities beyond getting the Flathub version verified.
@cassidy this is great!
@cassidy Yeeeey. Welcome to the snap club
@theron29 eh, the Snap is published and verified by Snapcrafters (e.g. likely put there by a Canonical employee), the Flatpak is verified by Discord themselves because their Linux-using employees are already actually using Flatpak and *want* to support it. Grassroots, baby.
@cassidy Hmmm... you are right with this particular package.
But that is not what I meant... My bad, I should have been more specific...
@cassidy Holy shit, how tf did you guys pull that off?! Discord is the only one of the evil social medias I still consider returning to from time to time, Matrix just still isn't ready to fully work as alternative like i hope since Element was still Riot and so many awesome open source projects are really easy to reach using it!
@cassidy Btw @BrodieOnLinux you probably started to work on it already if I had to guess but I would really love a video from you about the details here, that seems like the perfect topic for you! ;)
@cassidy cool can they make it work now
@leah that’s the hope!
@cassidy so does this mean discord is going to officially support it now?
@cassidy Steam, which is strange since Steam Link is verified and Steam itself is not.
