“The number of people who lived in the factory getting these machines up and running, 24/7 sleeping bags on the floor, is not zero. People’s whole lives to get that one slot perfect.”—ex-Apple engineers, on the Apple Watch band mechanism.

It’s one thing to make a great product, it’s another to exploit people in order to make a marginally better mechanism for a high-price fashion accessory.

@cassidy hmm, do the people that work on these very talented hardware teams at Apple, for some of them – the top of their design career, some with a 7 figure pay need that job so much they’re subjected to “labor exploitation”?

It’s more like, going the extra-mile to achieve something that for them, hardware designers is actually unique.

Calling this labor exploitation is actually more damaging for it dilutes the meaning for those who actually have to deal with it for real.

@emanuel @cassidy though I do understand where you're perspective is coming from, I believe Cassidy's response was really more so the comment on the labor extortion powers the west exercises against the east.

It's not about fancy hardware, it's about someone's entire existence relative to a factory while still being underpaid and overworked. Look past the design and consider the comment more on the mass manufacturing side.

@raygervais @cassidy

The interview is quite rich on detail, enough to tell that not only were they excited to work on machinery once exclusive to Rolex, they were trying something unique at all costs, for them – not just for Apple.

To me, this is not glorifying the thousands, poorly paid, abused factory workers.

This is a story of a group of individuals outdoing their wildest dreams on a level of machining and detail other engineers can only dream of and they’re clearly extremely proud!
